Finding My Way

Saturday, May 30, 2015

And here are some close-ups of the different elements:

I've been dabbling with a lot of different elements, techniques, and products here.  These are mostly from Prima.

This is called "Finding My Way" as I feel that's what I'm doing these days.  Branching out with new ideas and types of art.

It took me a couple of days, with drying times for the different mediums and just sort of trying to let things flow.  IRL there's lots of shiny glitter against some really textured matte surfaces.

Not totally in love with it, but finding my way is a process.

Stars One Layer Christmas Card Challenge

There's still a week to play along with the current One Layer Christmas card challenge.

When I think of stars, I think...Milky Way, galaxy, planets, moons...you name it.  So that's pretty much where I headed with this card.

I dragged my watercolor paper through some Dylusions ink sprays on my craft mat.  Next I added some acrylic paint through a star stencil.  Before it dried I sprinkled on some embossing powder. Then came a few black circles and a lot of bokeh type circles in white ink.

Here's what I used:
Paper:  Strathmore 140# watercolor
Ink:  archival jet black and Hero Arts unicorn white
Stamps:  STAMPlorations Vignette:  Christmas Block and Simon Says Stamp
All the other stuff:  Memory Box star stencil, Dylusions ink sprays, craft mat, sponge, Silks Acrylic paint, embossing powder, heat tool, distressing tool

Hope you can find some time to join us.  Our challenges are always Anything One Layer Christmas Goes, but those whose cards have the optional twist get an entry to the monthly random drawing for a prize.  One card with the twist = one entry to the monthly drawing.  You can enter as many one layer Christmas cards as you'd like!!!

VII Love Paris

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Venturing into a bit of a different direction today.  Well, maybe not a bit right?  *big grin*

I've been totally taken with the Finnabair style of mixed media these days, and there are so many interpretations.  This one is definitely CAS, if there is such a thing in this type of mixed media.  I watched a wonderful video from Keren Tamir where she created a beautiful piece of art.  Her style is also amazing.  And I recently received some of Sandra Evertson's gorgeous relics and wanted to play with them.  So here it is...

The Prima box has been covered with Graphite Texture Paste and then sprinkled with beads, micro beads and glass glitter.  While that was drying, the heart was painted with acrylics and the flame rubbed with Inka Gold.  The background for the heart was made with three types of aqua glitter. Next the corners were layered with various pieces and I used more alcohol inks and beads on them too.

Lucky me!  I get to take some classes with Finnabair in the not too distant future...looking so forward to that!!!  And, I'm thinking my next few pieces won't be so CAS, as I venture more into her style...

Here's what I used:
Prima Box, Prima Graphite Texture Paste, Sandra Evertson Relics & Artifacts, Oldgold Inka-Gold, Prima The Archivist Wood Icons, gold alcohol ink, silver alcohol ink, aqua alcohol ink, stream alcohol ink, Folk Art engine red paint, turquoise and zinc Prima Art Ingredients glass beads, black Prima Art Ingredients mico beads, Prima pitch black glass glitter, and a various other Prima trinkets and mechanicals

One Layer Christmas Card Challenge #10

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

I'm back with another card for the latest One Layer Christmas card challenge.  This challenge is ALWAYS an anything goes challenge, but using the optional twist will get you an entry into the monthly random drawing.

And here's my take on it:

A little grunge, a little sparkle, some acrylics...and a whole lot of fun!

I dripped some acrylics onto my watercolor paper and sprayed them with water so that they ran down the paper.  Next I used some white ink spray, which caused a cool effect with the acrylics and water. Then, I added some gold embossing paste through a large star stencil and then added a bit more randomly with my spatula.  Next I stamped the sentiment and some wonderfully grungy stamps, followed by a bit of distressing.

Check out the fabulous cards from the rest of the Design Team right here. Would love to have you  join us!

Here's what I used:
Paper:  Strathmore 140# watercolor paper
Ink:  Ranger Jet Black Archival
Stamps: STAMPlorations Mixed Media Grunge and Verve Peace on Earth
All the other stuff:  Golden High Flow Acrylics, Wendy Vecchi metallic gold embossing paste, spatula, TCW stencil, Dylusions White Linen ink spray, distressing tool.

Happy Belated Birthday Sandie!

Monday, May 18, 2015

Belated birthday wishes to my teamie, Sandie!  Hope you had an amazing day!  If you haven't checked it out yet, her blog, London Days is full of amazing inspiration.

The background was created with the stencil monoprint technique.  Then I stamped the florals two different shades of Distress Ink, followed Archival Ink.  I added lots of water over the images and then flicked some ink over top.  I wanted the appearance of florals without a lot of definition.

Here's what I used:
Paper:  Ranger watercolor paper and Neenah Solar White
Ink:  Distress and Archival
Stamps:  Altenew Persian Motifs and Super Script

Sandie, may your year ahead be full of love, laughter, and amazing experiences!

ATSM #144 Oh Happy Day or Not???

Tuesday, May 12, 2015

It's a clean and simple challenge at Addicted to Stamps and More this week.  Our sponsor is Sweet Pea Stamps and they are generously donating four digis from their store as the prize.

I took a sharp left turn somewhere and this wasn't quite as CAS as I'd have liked :)

Believe it or not, the floral and leaf images started out as a white pearl finish.  After using my various watercolors, it actually stained the embossing, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow right? I decided to embrace the oops!

So, here's how it went.  Embossed the leaves and florals in WHITE, heat set them and dropped in some Distress Inks and Kuretake Gansai watercolors. And here's where it went awry...I tried to remove the watercolor from the embossing with a baby wipe, after gently blotting it with a rag.  Then I splattered the background with a bit more watercolor and stamped the sentiment.

Here's what I used:
Paper:  Ranger watercolor and Neenah Solar White
Ink:  Distress Inks, Versamark and Ranger Jet Black Archival
Stamps:  Essential by Ellen
All the other stuff: Kuretake Gansai watercolors, white pearl embossing powder, heat tool, paintbrush, baby wipe, Lil' Inker Designs stitched rectangles, Big Shot Pro

One Layer Christmas Card Challenge #9 Reminder

Just a quick reminder; there's still time to get your card in for the One Layer Christmas card challenge!

As always, it's an "Anything Goes" challenge, and the optional twist this time around is angels:

My background has been made using a stencil monoprint technique.  If you are interested in learning this technique you'll find my step out and video tutorials here.  I've inked a stencil with three different shades of Distress Inks, misted it with water and pressed it onto my watercolor cardstock. Then I used another shade of Distress Ink with a different stencil over top of it.  Next, I flicked some water onto the cardstock to add a little more dimension.

Check out the beautiful inspiration from the rest of the Design Team right here.

Here's what I used:
Paper;  Strathmore 140# watercolor
Ink:  Distress and Archival inks
Stamps:  Recollections and Verve Glad Tidings
All the other stuff:  TCW stencil, Stencil Girl stencil, sponge, water

Challenges entered:

Tim's Tag May 2015

Monday, May 4, 2015

I adore this glorious tag from none other than the fabulous Tim Holtz:

12 Tags of 2015 - May | www.timholtz.com

And here's my very feminine spin on it:

This was a blast to do!  I used several of his techniques and most products on this tag are from his various lines.

The burlap tag adds such wonderful texture, and then I just basically added layers of ephemera, some ribbon roses, hand-dyed ribbons etc.  The sentiment pretty much echoes how I am trying to feel about art...be original, be fearless and be you, bravely.  Some days that's a very tall order :)

Here's what I used:
Big Shot Pro, Ranger #8 manila tag, textured surfaces, tag and bookplates die, photobooth, emporium ephemera, small talk stickers, misc. ribbon roses, loop pins, buttons, thrift shop ephemera pack, arrow adornments, light modeling paste, matte medium, seam binding, spun sugar distress ink, walnut stain distress ink, frayed burlap distress ink, sanding block, sponges, pearl stick pin

Yes, not my usual CAS design by any means, but I simply had so much fun. As much as I love making CAS cards, I truly love so many different styles...vintage being one of them!

MIX118 Fabulous You

Friday, May 1, 2015

Playing along with the mixed media challenge over at Splitcoaststampers today.  MariLynn has a smash technique to share there.

I placed three shades of distress inks on a folded piece of acetate and misted it with Perfect Pearls to create my "smash" background.  Once that was dry, I inked through as stencil with the same distress inks, and then moved it and inked through it again with archival ink.  Then I spritzed it with water and let some of the inks run again.

Next, I inked up the little tag with distress inks and stamped the sentiment.  It's been adhered to the card with two strips of washi tape and a brad.

There is a soft shimmer from the Perfect Pearls that didn't pick up on the camera. Please use your imagination :)

Here's what I used:
Paper:  Strathmore 140# watercolor paper and SU!
Ink:  Scattered Straw, Picked Raspberry, Bundled Sage, and Frayed Burlap Distress Inks;  MFT black hybrid ink; and Tree Branch Archival Ink
Stamps:  STAMPlorations The Bee's Knees City Girl
All the other stuff:  tag, bad, washi, TCW stencil, sponges, water mister, acetate, Perfect Pearls
